August is here, not only ushering in a new month, but the latest podcast as we get through this slow period in the sports calendar together. On deck:

(4:58) As we usher in a new month, it’s still a relatively slow time in the sports news cycle as we’re five weeks from the NFL season commencing and college football a week prior to that. Baseball remains front and center with the dog days of August still to come. I’ll recap the teams that went all in up until the 6pm trade deadline on Tuesday. (i.e. Dodgers, Orioles & Marlins) Wait! The Marlins? That’s not a typo, people. I’ll peek at some of the other deals that could have an impact in the pennant race over the next two months. What a difference a week makes for the Yankees as they’ve turned their fortunes around with a five game winning streak, punctuated by a three game sweep in Philadelphia. Are they officially back? On the flip side, there’s the Dodgers. They’ve been reeling as their once huge division lead is now down to a handful. Will they turn it around? Are the Padres and Diamondbacks going to nip at LA’s heels for the remainder of the season? I’ll also tap in on the entire MLB landscape to see where we’re at with the division and wild card races.

(33:44) Are you ready for some football, NFL fans? The preseason schedule kicks off tonight with the Hall of Fame game in Canton tonight. I’ll explain why I’m NOT interested in any of the games that are taking place this month. There were a couple of suspensions from players violating the league’s PED policy. Another player retirement. And an organization (the Bears) that doled out the largest contract in franchise history (WR DJ Moore)

(39:39) There was an NBA re-signing as Jarrett Allen re-ups on a three year deal with the Cavaliers. Does this make them a team to be reckoned with in the East? Do I really care about Jayson Tatum’s omission from the first game of the Olympics for the US Men’s Basketball game?

(41:21) We’re almost a week into the 2024 Summer Olympics. Simone Biles, who’s been dealing with a leg issue, comes up big to win a gold medal for the US Women’s Gymnastics Team. Besides that, it’s been mostly quiet. I’ll dive into why the Olympic Games haven’t done much for me to follow or even watch at this point. Will it change over the next ten days?

Which Teams Will Make Noise Before MLB Trade Deadline Tomorrow? Too Much, Too Soon As NFL QB’s Get Paid! TNT Duped By NBA? Early Olympic Storylines! Feeling Blue After FL Trip?

I’m honored to welcome in a new partnership to the podcast. Are you familiar with OLIPOP soda?  Please go to www.drinkolipop.com, use promo code JAYREELZ for 15% off of your purchase.

Good to be home, although I was feeling blue on Friday, I’ll unpack that and everything that’s taking place in the world of sports. On deck:

(2:53) Back in the New York groove at the home studio as opposed to the lovely back drop of palm trees and greenery of Florida. I’ll deliver some details of my trip to Florida at the end of the podcast.

(3:21) I have to mention the good folks at OLIPOP. Please see promo above.

(5:17) Baseball’s trade deadline is tomorrow at 6pm. Teams are searching for reinforcements in order to qualify for postseason play. There have already been some big moves to date (Phillies get closer Carlos Estevez & OF Austin Hays. Yankees acquire Jazz Chisholm. Orioles obtain Zac Eflin, Siranthony Dominguez & Cristian Pache. Mariners trade for Randy Arozarena and the Mets pickup Ryne Stanek and Jesse Winker) What other key players are still out there for the taking? Will other teams get involved in any last minute transactions? I’ll take a peek at the latest in the division and wild card races as the dog days of August are almost here.

(37:13) It must be nice to be a quarterback in the NFL. Two more guys get signed to enormous contract. Dolphins signed Tua Tagovailoa to the richest contract in the history of the franchise. While the Packers get Jordan Love to sign on the dotted line. Was this too much money for a QB that’s been injured with concussions in the past? Or a guy that only has one year of starting experience? It’s an interesting commentary on the state and market of what the cost of the QB is in 2024?

(44:30) TNT is looking to get back into the new media deal signed by the NBA where the network was left out. Warner Bros./Turner Media certainly has something to say about it as they may take this to court as they felt they were grossly misinterpreted of their contractual rights. How will this play out when it’s all said and done?

(47:37) One major signing in the NHL wasn’t much of a surprise. The Flyers and Travis Konecny have agreed to an eight year deal.

(48:34) I have a few interesting takeaways from the first two days of the Summer Olympics in Paris. How hurt is Simone Biles’s leg? Will anyone care about Novak Djokovic vs. Rafael Nadal? US Men’s Basketball Team rolls over Serbia, but how come Jayson Tatum didn’t play? Will NBA Rookie of the Year and France’s own Victor Wembanyama carry them deep into a medal game performance?

(55:10) Always transparent and accountable as I missed out on Saturday’s latest UFC matchup.

(56:23) I wrap up with sharing the rest of my trip to Florida, this time in Miami, which brought me home feeling a certain type of way.

Scherzer Snakes His Way Out Of NY, Angels Make Push As MLB Trade Deadline Looms. Colts Controversy, Aaron Rodgers Fires Back At Sean Payton. Crawford/Gaithje Dominate On Saturday Night

As July comes to a conclusion, I'll take a look back AND look ahead to what the sports galaxy has to offer as the latest podcast has arrived. On deck:

(3:44) The MLB trade deadline is tomorrow at 6pm. Some teams have been wheeling and dealing to fortify their rosters for a playoff stretch run (i.e. Angels), but the biggest deal to date was the Mets sending Max Scherzer to Texas for a minor league prospect. I GO IN on why this needed to happen? How Scherzer snaked his way out of town? And will the Mets make more deals before the deadline comes and goes? You won't want to miss what I have to say about this, as well as, the current state of the AL/NL wild card races. Can the Padres kick start their season after a sweep vs. the Rangers? The Brewers free fall. A HUGE week for the Yankees and much more as the dog days of August are on the horizon.

(32:22) Some controversy is brewing in Indianapolis as star running back, Jonathan Taylor and the front office are playing a psychological tug of war. The front office states that Taylor suffered a non football injury as he failed a physical prior to the start of training camp, whereas Taylor, says that's not the case. Could this get ugly quick as Taylor is in the final year of his rookie contract? Let the soap opera begin with the Jets as Aaron Rodgers has come to the defense of his current offensive coordinator and former Broncos head coach, Nathaniel Hackett. This comes in light of comments made by the current Denver coach, Sean Payton towards Hackett where QB Russell Wilson was mishandled throughout last year. Is this anything to keep on our radar as both teams will matchup in Week 5? Bengals fans have their fingers crossed as Joe Burrow went down with a calf injury in a non contact play during a drill on Thursday. Any long term concerns for the franchise QB? The Vikings avoided a breakup with star pass rusher Danielle Hunter as they agree on a one year deal.

(42:04) Terence Crawford showed Errol Spence Jr. a thing or two about being a welterweight champion as he dominated with a 9th round TKO on Saturday night. What's next for Crawford? And how will Spence recuperate from such a rough loss?

(44:31) Justin Gaethje had to wait five years to avenge his loss to Dustin Poirier winning by KO in the second round with a head kick. Could a third installment be in the works between the two fighters?

(46:16) Not much happening in the NHL or NBA. Although I do discuss Vladimir Tarasenko finds a home in Ottawa. While nothing much is happening on the Damian Lillard trade front as a memo went out to the 30 teams regarding the Blazers star guard.

Padres Win Soto Sweepstakes, Yanks Wheeling, Dodgers Not Dealing Highlight Deadline. NFL vs. NFLPA: League Appeals Watson's Suspension. Tiger Turns Down $800M? Mickelson Leads Lawsuit Against PGA

The sports stove has a few things percolating as we're into a new month. I'll serve up a high dosage of what you need as the latest episode has arrived. On deck:

(4:30) Coming off of an epic MLB trade deadline, I'll dissect the blockbuster trade by San Diego bringing in Juan Soto to their ballclub. Could the Padres possibly have three players worth over a BILLION dollars in contracts at the same time? What about the Yankees and how they've added to their roster? Also, what could plague them come October? The Dodgers weren't big time players in making transactions to solidify a couple of key spots on their team. I'll break down what some of the other playoff contenders have done, go through both leagues wild card scenarios, a division battle set this weekend between the Braves & Mets. A tribute to a broadcasting legend, Vin Scully. And thoughts on the last two episodes of The Captain, the ESPN documentary on Derek Jeter, that you may find intriguing.

(39:47) Deshaun Watson's suspension has finally come down to where an arbiter handed down six games for him to sit out at the start of the 2022 season. Thing is, the NFL has appealed that the suspension should be harsher. The Players Association was hoping that the league would've stood pat. Will this be a fight to the bitter end? How much will Watson get when it's all said and done? The Miami Dolphins were docked a first round draft pick next year, fined and their owner, Stephen Ross, was suspended for tampering violations against Tom Brady and former Saints coach, Sean Payton. Was this penalty warranted?

(48:15) In an interview this week, Greg Norman shouted out Tiger Woods as he allegedly passed up $700-$800 million from the LIV Golf Tour. Is Tiger in the wrong for not jumping to where the money is? Speaking of LIV, Phil Mickelson, among nine other golfers. are filing an antitrust lawsuit against the PGA so they can play in the upcoming FedEx Cup Playoffs. How will the PGA handle this now and moving forward?

MLB's Trade Deadline Whirlwind. State Of Mets Union: Time To Worry? LA Story: Westbrook Arrives! Kawhi On The Move? NHL's Free Agent Frenzy. NFL Camp News. Back Off On Biles & Her Mental Health

The early dog days of August are here and so is the latest episode #207 as I cover all that’s happening in the world of sports! On deck:

(5:15) The wild, crazy, fast and furious of the MLB trade deadline with tons of wheeling and dealing that we haven’t seen on this level. I'll assess all of the big deals (Max Scherzer/Trea Turner, Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez, Kris Bryant, etc.) and the impact that they'll have in the pennant race. Are the Yankees primed for a run to the postseason? Also, a little state of the Mets union that has me a little worried as we’re closing in on the final two months of the regular season.

(40:26) The NBA offseason has begun as I'll recap the little hype that the NBA draft produced this year, but I'll dive head first into the Lakers monster trade for Russell Westbrook. Why I think it could be more harm than good? Would you risk signing Kawhi Leonard if you're an NBA owner? And some of the other top headlines that are coming out (the Ben Simmons trade saga, anyone?)

(54:49) The NHL is off and running with free agency in their own right as you have players on the move (i.e. Marc Andre Fleury, Brandan Saad) and players staying put (Gabriel Landeskog and Brayden Point) Also, a longtime Bruin goes back home (David Krejci).

(1:00:25) I'm not ready for football just yet, but there's quite a bit to get into whether it's Xavien Howard's contract fallout in Miami, Aaron Rodgers's surprise return to training camp and the injury to Carson Wentz in Indianapolis which will interrupt their Super Bowl aspirations with a sprinkle of signings in Baltimore and Cleveland. Why are Madden 22 ratings part of the discussion in sports?

(1:09:10) The Olympics march on to its second full week, but the spotlight on Simone Biles withdrawing from both team and individual competition amid reports about mental health? Although she is coming back to compete in the beam final, how this story became the most talked about in the world? And why the criticism in some circles is downright wrong? Plus, the latest with what's going on in Tokyo.

(1:14:50) Lastly, my Hero and Zero of the Week.

Episode 83 slides into August with cool, slick sports talk to offset the early dog days. On deck:
